North Dakota 4-H Film Festival

A film showcase for youth

Participants create and submit a one- to 10-minute video to be evaluated. The top three videos in each category will be shown at the North Dakota 4-H Film Festival. Judges will select winners for each category prior to the festival, and audience members will vote for the People’s Choice Award after the videos have been shown at the festival.

Who can participate?
This event is for production teams of youth who are between the ages of 11-18 as of January 1, 2014. At least one member of each team must be a 4-H member (learn how to join 4-H at www.ndsu.edu/4h.) 

Guidelines
Check out the Submission Guidelines for more details on entering this film festival. Teams are encouraged to use the Team Checklist to make sure that they have completed and mailed in all required parts of the entry form.

Production team
Each production must contain one to four members, at least one of which must be a 4-H member. All awards will be shared among production team members. 

Category descriptions

  • Narrative: A film which tells a story. Can be based on fact or fiction. 
  • Animation: A film created by techniques, which simulate movement from individual images.
  • Documentary: A film which presents factual information about a person, event or process.
  • Music Video: A short film which accompanies a complete piece of music or song. Music should be original. Otherwise, submission must include ALL permissions from copyright owners.
  • 4-H Promotional:  A short film, PSA or service announcement meant to publicize 4-H programs.
  • Voices of 4-H History – A historical perspective on 4-H. This may be a narrative, documentary, animation, etc.

    How to enter
    For each video submitted, teams must submit the necessary paperwork and video and mail it by the June 20, 2014 deadline to participate.

    Your production team will need to complete and mail in the following along with the video in DVD format (do not use DVD-RW or DVD+RW. Use DVR-R):

    Preparing your video
    Before preparing your video, be sure to review the submission guidelines so you follow them when shooting and editing your video. Be aware that you will need to get a media release from every individual who participates in your video.

    Submitting your video
    Video must follow the submission guidelines and must be in the mail by the June 21 deadline to be evaluated and included in the festival. You will receive notification that your video was received. Include the Team Registration, Team Roster, Team Reflection and Media Releases with your video in DVD format (do not use DVD-RW).

    The festival
    Submitted video will be judged by independent judges. The top three videos in each category will be shown during the North Dakota 4-H Film Festival on Sunday, July 20, 2014. The festival will start at 2 p.m. in the Norsk Room in the State Fair Center.

You must get permission from the author to use such original works. Videos submitted to the North Dakota 4-H Film Festival must not include any copyrighted works of other authors. Only public domain music should be used in video submitted to the North Dakota 4-H Film Festival.
