Faculty
International Development Grants:
Information Sheet
Faculty International Development Grants are available to faculty
seeking to enhance their international professional development.
They provide funding to faculty to design new courses or curricula
with an international component, develop innovative programs, and/or
set up exchanges or linkage arrangements with overseas institutions.
The goal is to promote internationalization of the NDSU campus in
ways that directly affect student learning and to provide long-term
benefits to the university community. Grants are not available to
fund faculty research, travel to present a paper, lecture abroad,
or to buy out faculty time. Faculty can apply for grants of up to
$2,000.
Faculty International Development
Grants (FIDG) may not be sufficient to fund all of an activity
but can assist in making the activity possible. Combined sources
of funding are encouraged and should be detailed in the budget
section of the grant proposal. Proposals can be submitted at
any time and will be reviewed by the International Advisory
Council (IAC) at a subsequent meeting. The IAC meets regularly
during the academic year. The proposal plus ten copies, which
include the cover sheet, should be submitted to the Office of
International Programs, Ceres Hall 338.
It is important to be clear and specific about the outcomes
expected from the proposed activity. It is important to detail
in the proposal those outcomes envisioned for students and the
broader university community as a result of the funded activity.
FIDG proposals should be no longer than five pages in length, not
including supplementary material. Proposals should contain a short
resume also. The proposals should contain the following sections:
| Background: |
Explain
where the idea for the project originated. |
| Description: |
Describe
the activity as fully as possible. What is planned, where, when
and how? |
| Rationale: |
Why
is this particular project of interest? How specifically will
the activity benefit NDSU students? How will it improve pedagogy? |
| Outcomes:
|
What
will be the specific and tangible outcomes or results of this
project? How will these benefits be spread across the university
community? |
| Budget: |
The
IAC will need a clear budget breakdown of the total cost of
the proposed activity. Please list any and all other sources
of funding which have already been received or for which you
intend to apply. |
| Monitoring,
Evaluation and Management: |
Who's
responsible for which aspects of the project? How will progress
be tracked? How will the results be evaluated when everything
is done? |
| Timetable: |
When
will the project begin and when will it be over? Please be as
specific as possible. If significant delays are experienced,
please inform the IAC.
|
Applicants should keep in mind that the proposed project may have
implications for their department. Therefore, FIDG proposals should
bear the endorsement of the Department Chair.
FIDG Proposal Budgets
There is no specific budget format. However, all budgets should
be clear and comprehensive. Reminder: FIDG will not pay for faculty
salaries or buy out time and this information should not appear
as a line item in the budget.
Review Procedures
All proposals, which adhere to the criteria outlined here, will be
reviewed by the International Advisory Council. Proposals which are
not complete will be returned. The criteria used to evaluate the proposals
include:
- Demonstrated impact on student learning
- Demonstrated impact on teaching and learning
- Explicit presentation of tangible outcomes with some wider
long-term benefit for the University community.
A Final Reports A final report must be submitted within three months
of the completion of the project. Grant recipients who do not turn
in final reports are ineligible for further awards. Reports should
include:
| Objectives
and Outcomes: |
Briefly review the purpose of
the activity and what specific things were hoped to be accomplished
or achieved. Comment on what was achieved, what was not achieved
and why. |
| Discussion: |
Talk briefly about the significance
of the experience or activity in terms of how satisfactory were
the outcomes, unanticipated problems, pleasant surprises, etc. |
| Application: |
Tell us how the results have been
put to use and where. If the project is designed to continue,
tell us what arrangements have been made. |
Miscellaneous
FIDG are not intended to underwrite or replace already existing
departmental budgets but to augment them for purposes which
extend and enhance international educational offerings and opportunities.
