The fourteen-question instrument has been adapted from the National Survey of Students Engagement for their measurability of student engagement at the classroom level. All responses are ranked on a four-point scale as shown on the survey form.

By totaling the scores from questions 1 through 14, the engagement score is calculated. Please note that question five, which is a question about the amount of rote memorization of class material, was recoded (1 became 4, 2 became 3, 3 became 2, and 4 became 1). The engagement score can range from 14 to 56.

Based on NDSU SSE data (N>8,000) for Spring 2001, Fall 2001, and Spring 2002, the average engagement score is about 36 and the standard deviation is about 7.
