The fourteen-question instrument has been adapted from the National Survey of Students Engagement for their measurability of student engagement at the classroom level. All responses are ranked on a four-point scale as shown on the survey form.

By totaling the scores from questions 1 through 14, the engagement score is calculated. Please note that question five, which is a question about the amount of rote memorization of class material, was recoded (1 became 4, 2 became 3, 3 became 2, and 4 became 1). The engagement score can range from 14 to 56.

Based on NDSU SSE data (N>8,000) for Spring 2001, Fall 2001, and Spring 2002, the average engagement score is about 36 and the standard deviation is about 7. You can see interesting results below that how engagement scores vary with enrollment, class level, and college. You can also see below the NDSU and national statistics of each corresponding question on the NSSE-2000 Survey.
