Study Tours
What is a "Study Tour" in Hospitality?
A study tour is a short term learning opportunity that is completed off-campus. Study tours are offered approximately once per year and are variable credit. Study tours are not required and are optional course offerings for majors and minors in the program. Students learn what they cannot learn in classrooms.

Summer 2009 South Korea (3 credits)
In June of 2009 (exact date to be determined), the Hospitality and Tourism Management program and Interior Design program will co-host a study tour to South Korea. The trip will include round trip airfare from Fargo to Seoul, Korea, most meals, ground transportation, and a program packed with activities. Activities will include tours of historic and cultural places, industry tours (HTM and ID will visit different companies), and collaborating activities with students in Korean HTM program. Study tours offered in recent past:
Fall 2007 New York City (2 credits)
From November 8-12, 2007, students in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program earned 2 credits on a study tour to New York City which included attending the International Hotel/Motel and Restaurant Show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. A total of 24 students participated in this study tour which included visits to three of New York’s finest hotels: Ritz Carlton-Central Park, The Marriott Marquis Time Square, and the Waldorf=Astoria. The group did a full-day sightseeing tour of NYC by coach including a harbor ferry ride and a visit to the United Nations. They also had a fine-dining Sunday Brunch experience at the Waldorf=Astoria. During these visits, students interacted with senior hospitality executives and asked them questions about their operations and possible career opportunities.
Spring 2007 Chicago (2 credits)
From May 19-23, 2007, students in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program earned 1 credit on a study tour to the National Restaurant Show held in Chicago, Illinois, the western hemisphere's largest foodservice and hospitality event. Students met during the spring semester in 2007 to plan for the study tour while they earned one credit. A total of 7 students attended this study tour. A couple of students among the seven attended the Salute to Excellence event held by the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation. Tyne Olson and Jesse Romanyshyn attended this event by invitation to represent North Dakota State University. Click here for pictures from this trip.
Past Study Tours:
Study Tour: Fall 2005, 2credits
In the fall of 2005, the Hospitality and Tourism Management study tour class travelled to Minneapolis to see world famous attractions, tour hotels and network with industry professionals.
Study Tour: Fall 2004, 2credits
In the fall of 2004, students in the Hospitality and Tourism Managment program earned 2 credits on a study tour to New York, NY. The trip included round trip airfare from Fargo to New York, hotel accommodations, and entrance to the International Hotel & Restaurant Show. Other activities included tours of the Waldorf-Astoria, Four Seasons, and The Plaza hotels. There were 20 students and two faculty members who participated. In addition to the trip, the class met once per week to discuss travel plans and to learn about New York City, the IHRS and hotels prior to departure.
Study Tour: Spring 2003, 3 credits
In the spring of 2003, students in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program earned 3 credits on a study tour to Tuscany, Italy. The trip included round trip airfare from Fargo to Florence, hotel accommodations, most meals, ground transportation and a program packed with activities. These activities included cooking classes on Tuscan cuisine, tours of 3 star and 4 star hotels in Florence, a tour of Chianti wine country, wine tasting, a food and wine pairing seminar, and visitation of various tourist attractions in Florence.
The trip took place over spring break, 2003. There were 15 students and one faculty member who participated. In addition to the trip, the class met once per week to discuss travel plans and to learn about the Tuscan region prior to departure. What is "Study Abroad" in Hospitality?
In addition to, or in place of a study tour, students can complete a study abroad program. Study Abroad requires students to complete college credit courses at a University in a foreign country. Currently, Hospitality students have two options for Study Abroad.
Study Abroad: Fall or Spring Semester, 12 credits minimum
Students can complete a Study Abroad program at the University of Sunshine Coast near Brisbane, Australia. These can be completed either during the fall or spring semester. Course offerings are variable and designed to meet the individual student's needs. In addition to courses, students can complete a required internship while living and studying in Australia.
