“Advancing Life Quality, Economic Well-Being, and Addressing Personal and Societal Needs Through Engagement Learning, and Discovery in the Near Environment."
The faculty and staff members of the Apparel, Design, and Hospitality Management Department would like to welcome you to our web page and to our department should you choose one of our programs.
We have many opportunities to offer students interested in our areas of study. Our programs are professionally based and have elements of design, technology, and management interlaced into our majors. In addition, a strong general education component is provided for all majors which aids students in learning to integrate all of their educational components.
Course work in all of our majors provides students with "real life" projects. For example, interior design students frequently work on design solutions on campus or in the community. Students in our visual merchandising class undertake display work with local retailers.
We offer study tours regionally, nationally, and internationally to such places as Kansas City ; Chicago; New York; Los Angeles; Las Vegas, London and Paris. In December 2008, a trip to India was offered. Students may also choose to attend schools in such places as New York City or London, England, or Geneva, Switzerland for a summer, a semester, or for a year. In addition, numerous other study abroad programs around the world are available to our student via the office of International Programs. Students work with an advisor to ensure that the transfer of credits occurs prior to taking advantage of one of these opportunities.
There are active student organizations in each of our major areas of study. Students plan educational programs and tours, attend regional and national professional meetings, undertake service projects for the NDSU campus and community, and often plan field trips to manufacturers, interior design firms, museums, trade shows, and the like.
All of these opportunities provide students with experiences that highlight the uses of their college education as well as broaden their thinking about the world around them.
The students have found some wonderful job opportunities in their fields, after graduating from one of our programs. The careers our students pursue are always fast paced and a few are "sit behind a desk" type positions. Salaries have been very good. The last report shows salary ranges between $27,000 and $45,000 for 2010 graduates; this is dependent on the student's major.
To indicate your interest in one of our programs, contact our department. We would be happy to visit with you personally about your interests and career goals. We can arrange a campus and department tour, visit a class, or visit with one of our current students or faculty members.
Sincerely,
Holly E. Bastow-Shoop, Ph.D.
Professor/Head
