Granting Consent to not Mail a Paper 1098-T

Students have the ability to "Grant Consent" to only receive their 1098-T via on-line access.  By granting consent students agree to not receive a paper 1098-T through the mail.  This granting of consent will also apply to future years unless the student requests to relinquish the consent.  Please consider granting your consent in order to avoid receiving a paper 1098-T via the mail.

There are several benefits to granting consent:

-  Reduced printing saves paper, which is a Green Initiative.  (Printing your 1098-T from Campus Connection is the student’s option and not required by the IRS.)

-  Incorrect addresses on 1098-Ts will not result in lost mail.

Please note that you are able to view and print your 1098-T online even if you do not grant consent.  For those who do not grant consent, your mailed 1098-T should be received by the end of January.

To grant consent, access the 1098-Ts in Campus Connection, click on the button "Grant Consent" and read the consent agreement to accept it. The "Grant Consent" button will not be available if consent was previously granted. To have your consent removed, contact Customer Account Services at 701-231-8782.

Requesting a Duplicate 1098-T

1098-Ts are available on the student's Campus Connection account.  As a result reprint requests are assessed a $5.00 fee.  Students may request a reprint in person at NDSU’s Customer Account Services office in Ceres Hall 302 or online through the following NDSU MarketPlace Link

Please note that if the request for the duplicate form through Marketplace is not made by use of the student’s NDSU email address, we will still need a separate authorization from the student to ensure that the Student’s Privacy Information is not compromised.

Explanation of Form 1098-T

NDSU may not provide tax advice.  For questions on how to use the 1098-T, please consult your tax advisor or see the IRS Publication 970 and IRS Form 8863.

Box 1. This box is blank since NDSU does not report 1098-T information on tuition paid. Instead, tuition billed is reported in Box 2.

Box 2. This box reports the total amount billed (not paid) in the calendar year for qualified tuition and related fees less any qualified waivers.

Box 4. This box reports any reduction made during the calendar year to qualified tuition and related fees reported in Box 2 on a prior year Form 1098-T.  This amount may reduce any allowable education credit claimed for the prior year.

Box 5. This box reports the total of all scholarships, grants, or additional third party billings administered and processed through NDSU. The amount of scholarships or grants for the calendar year may reduce the amount of any allowable tuition and fees deduction or education credit that is claimed for the year.  Scholarships and grants generally include all payments received from a third party (excluding family members and loan proceeds).  This includes payments received form governmental and private entities such as the Department of Defense, civic, religious and nonprofit entities.

Box 6. This box reports any reduction made during the calendar year to scholarships or grants on a prior year Form 1098-T.  This amount may affect the amount of any allowable tuition and fees deduction or the education credit you may claim for the prior year.

Box 8. This box reports whether the student was considered to be carrying at least one-half the normal full-time workload for your course of study at NDSU.  If the student is at least a one-half time student for one academic period that begins during the year, the student may meet one of the requirements to qualify for the Hope credit.  If enrolled less than one-half time for at least one semester, the student may still be eligible to claim the tuition and fee deduction or the lifelong learning credit.

Box 9. This box reports whether the student is considered to be enrolled in a program leading to a graduate degree, graduate-level certificate, or other recognized graduate-level educational credential. If the student is enrolled in a graduate program, the student is not eligible for the Hope credit, but may qualify for the tuition and fees deduction or the lifetime learning credit.
