College/Departmental Scholarships

The respective college and/or department typically makes decisions for the following scholarships. The minimum qualifications vary and may include strong academic achievement in high school or outstanding talent, skill, strong interest and/or background in a given area. Please note special application procedures may apply and the varying deadlines. The Office of Admission will supply the Freshman Scholarship Application to the departments that use this common application. Please be sure the academic major indicated on the scholarship application corresponds with the major listed on the Application for Admission. If discrepancies exist between major on the scholarship and admission applications, students will be considered for the major listed on the application for admission.



Air Force and Army ROTC Scholarships

  • Amount: Variable
  • Eligibility: Various scholarships are available from both the Air Force and Army. To request a separate application for these scholarships, please contact the Air Force ROTC at 701-231-8186 and the Army ROTC at 701-231-7575.



College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources

  • Amount: $500-$700 (non-renewable)
  • Eligibility: Several first year scholarships are available to incoming freshmen who plan to major in one of the courses of study through the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources. Students interested in these scholarships should submit the Freshman Scholarship Application to the Office of Admission. Students declaring a major in agricultural economics should request a separate scholarship application from the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics at 701-231-7441.

NOTE: Recipients of the NDSU Presidential or Presidential Honor Scholarship are eligible for the Frank Bain Freshman Honor Scholarship - an additional $2,000 award. The award is dispersed at $1,000 per semester for one year, provided the recipient remains in the college and maintains a 3.0 GPA.



College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

  • Amount: Variable
  • Eligibility: Numerous Fine Arts scholarships, including music, visual arts and theatre, are available. Deadlines for these scholarships vary. For more information, please contact the Division of Fine Arts at 701-231-7932 or by mail at P.O. Box 5691, Fargo, ND 58105.

    The Department of Communication offers a variety of named scholarships targeting students with good grades and interest in writing for print media, speech performance, broadcasting (writing and production), forensics (debate and individual events) and leadership. Most are for juniors and seniors and some are only for students with demonstrable need. Apply on a downloaded form on the department Web site by March 31, 2009.

    For those interested in the history major at NDSU, a $500 scholarship is available for students who demonstrate strong academic achievement in high school and a commitment to history. Request a separate application from the Department of History at 701-231-8654 and complete by March 15, 2009.



College of Business


Mildred Larson Business Presidential Scholarship

  • Amount: $1,500 (four years of eligibility; 9 scholarships available)
  • Eligibility: Awarded to entering freshmen in the College of Business who demonstrate exemplary academic records as well as high ACT or SAT scores. Students must submit the Freshman Scholarship Application by February 1, 2009, and declare a major in the College of Business. The Mildred Larson Business Presidential Scholarship is disbursed $1,500 per year ($750 per semester) over four consecutive years of study at NDSU. Students must remain in the College of Business and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.



College of Engineering and Architecture


Walter B. and Helene Booth Presidential Scholarship

  • Amount: $2,500 (four years of eligibility; 1 scholarship available)
  • Eligibility: Awarded to an incoming freshman in the field of engineering who demonstrates an exemplary academic record as well as a high ACT or SAT score. Students must declare a major in the field of engineering and submit the Freshman Scholarship Application by February 1, 2009. The Booth Presidential Scholarship is dispersed $2,500 per year ($1,250 per semester) over four consecutive years of undergraduate study at NDSU, and requires the recipient to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Jeld-Wen Scholarship

  • Amount: $750 (1 scholarship available)
  • Eligibility: Awarded to an incoming freshman who declares a major in construction management. Preference is given to students from the Fargo-Moorhead area who demonstrate financial need. Students must declare a major in construction management and submit the Freshman Scholarship Application to the Office of Admission by February 1, 2009.

Helgason Scholarship

  • Amount: $500 (8 scholarships available)
  • Eligibility: Awarded to incoming freshmen in the College of Engineering and Architecture who display strong academic achievement and have high ACT or SAT scores. Students must submit the Freshman Scholarship Application and declare a major in the College of Engineering and Architecture by February 1, 2009.



College of Human Development and Education

  • Amount: $325-$6,000
  • Eligibility: The College of Human Development and Education awards 20 scholarships to first-year students, some of which are available for up to four years. Scholarships are awarded to students in the following majors: apparel and textiles; chemistry education; child development and family science; elementary education; exercise science; dietetics; family and consumer sciences education; health education; hospitality and tourism management; interior design; physical education; retail management; and sport and recreation studies. College of Science and Mathematics

  • Amount: Variable
  • Eligibility: Scholarships are available to students declaring a major in chemistry, psychology or zoology. The College of Science and Mathematics also awards textbook scholarships to select first-year students with high academic achievement. Students must submit the Freshman Scholarship Application to the Office of Admission by February 1, 2009.

    Scholarships are available to incoming first-year students with a high GPA who declare a major in mathematics. Request a separate application from the Department of Mathematics at 701-231-8561 by the May 1, 2009, deadline. Students can also complete the application at www.ndsu.edu/math/.

Polymers Scholarship

  • Amount: $500 (8 scholarships available)
  • Eligibility: Awarded to incoming freshmen in the College of Engineering and Architecture who display strong academic achievement and have high ACT or SAT scores. Students must submit the Freshman Scholarship Application and declare a major in the College of Engineering and Architecture by February 1, 2009.
