College Transfer Coursework & Credit by Examination Placement
Students with prior college coursework, Advanced Placement (AP) or other credit-by-examination (CLEP, IB, DSST) will follow NDSU’s Credit by Examination guidelines for placement into mathematics and English coursework.
Students are required to submit official college transcripts directly to NDSU from the post-secondary institution(s) that granted college credit (credit is not awarded off high school transcripts). Official credit-by-examination score reports must be sent directly from the testing agency to the NDSU Office of Admission, Dept. 5230, PO Box 6050, Fargo, ND 58108-6050.
Credit by Examination
Upon receipt of official score report(s) for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), CLEP or DSST credit will be applied to the student’s academic record if minimum required exam scores are earned. If these scores are for mathematics or English and are received prior to the student’s registration period, earned credit will be used for placement purposes. If these scores are not received prior to the student’s registration period, students may be placed based on Math and/or English ACT or COMPASS score. Students may choose to delay their math or English course registration until official score reports are received.
Note: Credit-by-examination opportunities are only available for select math and English subjects and courses.
Prior College Coursework
Upon receipt of official college or university transcript(s), the Office of Registration and Records will evaluate prior college-level coursework and apply the appropriate credit to the curricular requirements and academic record. If credit is awarded for mathematics or English and is received prior to the student’s registration period, earned credit will be used to determine subsequent math and/or English enrollments. If transcripts are not received prior to the student’s registration period, ACT or COMPASS will be used to determine placement into a NDSU math or English course. Students may choose to delay their math or English course registration until prior college coursework is received and evaluated.
