The Gazette's Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year: It's hard to think high-octane Vista Ridge High School (Colorado Springs, CO) coach Jay Peltier once yawned over his dead-end job. "Just really bored with it," Peltier said of his job at a Minnesota recruiting company six years ago. But after a career change, some extra schooling and a flight to Colorado, teacher and coach Peltier had the Vista Ridge boys' track and field program on top of the 4A podium by the end of the season. "It was a fun year and these kids earned it," said Peltier, who just finished his second year as the Wolves' head track and field coach. "We expect the best from our kids and coaches here. And every one of them brought their best." In fact, they did even on the days when the track team didn't have a place to practice. Over the course of the season, the fifth-year program was hampered by the overextended winter weather, two bomb threats in one week and a consistently fluctuating meet schedule. "That inconsistency, that is tough in this sport., You want a rhythm. You want a routine," Peltier said. "But the last couple of weeks of that season we had a goal in mind. And I think there was this new sense of focus that got us to it." And it proved triumphant. At the state meet, Vista Ridge reached the finals in 11 of the 18 events to amass enough points to give the school its first title in any sport.
