DRESS FOR SUCCESS at a career fair, interview, or on the job

Comments from businesses in the

College of Science and Mathematics

man in white dress shirt, jeans, white tennis shoes What is your First Impression?

  • Doesn't look like he is looking for a job

  • The untucked shirt is unprofessional; Goes too far beyond "casual"
  • Not a good impression if the venue is an opportunity to meet a potential employer because it shows you're not trying very hard

  • Nice guy - ready to install cable or be a big brother

Is this appropriate for a Career Fair?

  • At a minimum, would tuck in the shirt and wear leather shoes if you have them, then that would pass sufficiently at a career fair. If you can afford business casual pants vs jeans would strongly advise that as you'll be compared against more sharply dressed candidates; You are making yourself more work to get past the over-relaxed attire and make yourself credible.

  • A tad too relaxed

Is this appropriate for an Interview?

  • Find a way to purchase at least one "interviewing" outfit or borrow something from a friend/family member if possible
  • I would expect more
  • Not acceptable for skilled position; For a non-skilled job could be okay
