1 Position = June 9 through August 15, 2008

The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center (NPWRC) is looking for a current or recently graduated student to fill a position manipulating geospatial data for their Cottonwood Lake Study Area (CLSA) (www.npwrc.usgs.gov/clsa). The CLSA is located in northwestern Stutsman County, North Dakota and is the site of a long-term research effort being conducted by NPWRC biologists. Bird, amphibian, invertebrate, and plant communities are monitored annually at the site to further our understanding of community responses to environmental change resulting from climate fluctuations and cycles. Aerial photographs of these monitored wetlands are taken yearly, and wetland plant community zones are delineated from these photographs.

Type of Services Required:
Under the direction of a USGS Geographer and Wildlife Biologist, the selected individual will 1) georeference, georectify, and interpret aerial photographs, 2) import/export spatial data between GIS software packages, 3) assign coordinate systems and reproject data into different projections and datums, and 4) manipulate and acquire other related geospatial data. The selected individual may also delineate and digitize wetland plant community zones from the CLSA images. Work will be monitored closely by the supervisor to ensure that expectations are met.

Level of Academic Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Expertise Required:

A general knowledge of and experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial data manipulation is required. Experience with ESRI ArcGIS is highly desired. Experience with TNT MicroImages is desirable, but not required. Familiarity or experience with, or demonstrated interest in, wetlands of the prairie pothole region is also highly desired. Preferred experience includes georeferencing, georectifying, and interpreting aerial photographs, exporting/importing spatial data between GIS software packages, assigning coordinate systems and reprojecting data, and digitizing landscape features.

The position requires completion of a minimum of 2 years of college education in a program leading to a B.S. degree in natural resources management, environmental science, conservation science, range science, zoology, biology, or a closely related subject area.

Description of Working Environment Conditions:
This position will primarily involve indoor office work. The work environment is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The student will be expected to conduct duties in a safe, orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which they are entrusted. This position may also involve some outdoor work collecting or verifying data in and near the CLSA.
