The Couple and Family Therapy Option

The Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) option is a three-year program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Marriage and Family Therapy Education, designed to train students interested in working in clinical settings as couple and family therapists. This option involves intensive course work and an on-campus practicum the first two years, with thesis work and an off-campus practicum the third year.

Degree Requirements

The Couple and Family Therapy option requires 57-61 credits:

All students in CFT option must:

  1. Maintain a B average or better.
  2. Complete either a paper (with additional course work) or a thesis and pass an oral defense of the paper or thesis.
  3. CFT students must successfully complete the following core requirements:
  • CDFS 701 - Graduate Orientation (1 credit)
  • CDFS 703 - Research Methods (3 credits)
  • CDFS 773 - Foundations of Marital & Family Therapy 1 (3 credits)
  • CDFS 774 - Foundations of Marital & Family Therapy II (3 credits)
  • CDFS 775 - Clinical Applications in Marital & Family Therapy I (3 credits)
  • CDFS 776 - Clinical Applications in Marital & Family Therapy II (3 credits)
  • CDFS 777 - Diagnosis & Assessment in Marital & Family Therapy - 3 credits
  • CDFS 778 - Clinical Applications in Marital & Family Therapy III - 3 credits
  • CDFS 780 - Ethics & Professional Issues in Marital & Family Therapy - 3 credits
  • CDFS 785 - Family Theories - 3 credits
  • CDFS 790 - Seminar - Special Topics in Research Methods - 3 credits
  • CDFS 794 - Practicum - 19 credits
  • CDFS 798 - Thesis - 6 credits
