The Family Therapy Center Collaborates with Migrant Health Services

The Family Therapy Center (FTC) has begun its work in collaboration with Migrant Health Services to provide therapy services to Latina/ o families in the Fargo-Moorhead community. This past fall the FTC was awarded a 3 year $150,000 grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation to provide culturally responsive therapy services to the Latina/ o community.

At the FTC we believe in honoring the lived experiences of the Latina/o community and building on the strengths of the Latina/ o culture. This summer (2006) the CFT program will train our students how to be responsive to the needs of the Latina/ o community by bringing in leaders of the Latina/ o community to the clinic. Our hope is to have students trained and the program running by August 2006!

The Family Therapy Center is also looking for members of the Latina/o community to serve as cultural advocates. These cultural advocates will serve as consultants to the therapists at the Family Therapy Center to ensure that the services that we provide are responsive and accountable to the needs of the Latina/ o community. Advocates will receive financial compensation for their involvement in this project. The responsibilities of the advocates include participating in initial training's and attending therapy appointments with Latino families at the Family Therapy Center. If you or someone you may know are interested in working as a mental health advocate for the Latino community in the F-M area please contact Tom Stone Carlson at 701-231-8279
