Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam is taken by engineering students who are within (1) year or (2) semesters of graduating. The FE Exam is required for anyone looking to become licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE).
The first exam in the licensure process is the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE). This exam is offered in April and October every year.
- The dates for 2013 are April 13th, and October 26th.
- The dates for 2014 are April 12th, and October 25th.
Step 1
Complete the application and submit to Sheri in the Dean’s Office, Engineering Administration, Room 203. The application deadline is Tuesday, January 29th, 2013 for the April exam.
Step 2
Register on theNCEES website and pay the registration fee. Once you get to this page, select North Dakota, follow all of the online directions and pay the $125 registration fee which will be due no later than Wednesday, February 21st, 2013. If you do not complete your registration by the deadline, you will NOT be allowed to take the exam. NO EXCEPTIONS! You would then have to wait until October to take the exam.
Step 3
The location for the FE Exam on April 13th, 2013 will be at the NDSU Memorial Union Ballroom. Registration will begin at 7:15 a.m. with the doors being locked at 7:40 a.m. If you arrive after that time, you will be not be allowed to take the exam and you will forfeit your $125 registration fee.

What kind of calculator can I use?

Any calculator not on this approved list will not be allowed into the testing site. They are very strict on this rule so please make sure you have the correct one.
Where do I get the reference and review manuals?
When you complete your application in the Dean’s Office, you will receive a reference manual. This manual contains all the formulas and references that you will use during the exam. The manual that you receive is yours to keep as you will receive a new manual the morning of the exam. Review manuals can be purchased from NCEES at their website. http://www.ncees.org/Exams/Study_materials.php?exam=FE.
Will there be review sessions in the college?
Usually 1-2 weeks prior to the exam, review sessions are held. These sessions cover topics such as Thermodynamics, Dynamics, Fluids and Ethics, just to name a few.
When do I get the results?
Results will be received within 8-10 weeks after the exam.
