Center for Writers


Employment Opportunities

The Center for Writers hires NDSU undergraduate and graduate students to work as peer writing consultants for 5-15 hours per week.  The hiring of new consultants is conducted during spring term for work to begin the following fall.  

Interested undergraduate students should complete the application form and submit all required materials to the Director of the Center for Writers, Ms. Mary Pull.  Her office is located on the lower level of the NDSU library inside the Center for Writers, room 6.

Preference for hiring is given to applicants with writing center or other tutoring experience, so students interested in applying for a position are encouraged to enroll in ENGL 301:  Peer Tutoring and Writing in the Disciplines.   The course explores individual writing instruction for native and non-native speakers of English, as well as the conventions of disciplinary writing.  In addition to classroom work and assignments, students will complete a practicum in the Center for Writers.   

Writing consultants perform the following duties:  

  • conduct one-on-one conferences with native and non-native English speakers 
  • provide individual feedback on a variety of course papers and assignments from all disciplines, as well as on personal documents such as application letters and resumes
  • schedule appointments and answer the telephone
  • keep records and perform other office duties
  • greet clients and establish a friendly atmosphere
  • complete other tasks as determined by the director and assistant director

Prospective consultants should possess the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • strong writing and speaking skills
  • ability to quickly read and assess texts from a variety of disciplines
  • ability to provide clear and thoughtful feedback about rhetorical considerations such as genre, audience, purpose, focus, organization, development, and clarity
  • desire to work closely with others
  • ability to be friendly, patient, and tactful
  • willingness to participate in regular training sessions and individual professional development
  • ability to keep accurate records
  • ability to maintain confidentiality of client information
  • ability to use common computer applications
