  • Brian Kalk, MS ’01, environmental engineering, PhD ’07, natural resources management, was appointed to the National Coal Council. He is chair of the North Dakota Public Service commission. August 2014
  • Ryan Moen, BS ’04, computer science, joined Western State Bank in West Fargo, North Dakota, as director of information technology. He previously was a software development engineer at Microsoft, Fargo. July 2014
  • Gwen McCausland, BS ’01, sociology, was named director of the South Dakota State Agricultural Heritage Museum in Brookings, South Dakota. She previously was marketing coordinator and exhibit designer for the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County in Moorhead, Minnesota. July 2014
  • Andrew Gress, BS ’04, history, was appointed academic dean of the Des Moines, Iowa, campus of Kaplan University. He serves as the chief academic officer to the campus, managing academic administrative operations as well as faculty and academic support services. He lives in Clive, Iowa. July 2014
  • Amanda (Thieschafer) Smock, BS ’05, human performance and fitness, won her third outdoor national title in the triple jump during the U.S. Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California. Earlier this year, she won her third consecutive indoor title in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was a 2012 London Olympian. June 2014
  • Kelly (Holtman) Griffin, BS ’05, apparel and textiles, was has inducted into the 2014 Accessories Magazine Hall of Fame. She was honored at the Fashion Accessories Benefit Ball in New York and received a full-page profile in Accessories Magazine February issue. She is the accessories merchandise manager for Christopher and Banks Corp. June 2014
  • Tyler Mohr, BS ’08, hospitality and tourism management, was named 2013 Air Force Reserve Command Outstanding Airman of the Year. He is a 445th Airlift Wing command post airman at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. June 2014
  • Samuel Wlke, BS ’05, civil engineering, was promoted to structural division manager for Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services Inc., known as AE2S. He will be based in the company’s Fargo office. June 2014
  • Rachel Riopel Wiley, BArch ’05, architecture, was named to Building Design+Construction magazine’s “40 Under 40” class of 2014. The publication’s editors made their selections based on career achievement, service to the profession and charitable work. Riopel Wiley is the director of building information modeling, known as BIM, for the central region of HDR Inc. of St. Paul, Minn. She is an active member of AIA Minnesota, a state society of the American Institute of Architects, and serves as a board member for the Minnesota Revit Users Group. May 2014
  • Alexander Berg, BS ’05, PhD ’08, pharmaceutical sciences, PharmD ’10, pharmacy, was presented the 2014 McKeen Cattell Memorial Award by the American College of Pharmacology. He is a senior clinical research scientist for the Clinical Pharmacology Group of Upsher-Smith Laboratories Inc. May 2014
