To become a clinical laboratory scientist (medical technologist), a student must complete North Dakota State University's general education and CLS major curriculum requirements which include a 12-month clinical internship within an accredited, affiliated school of clinical laboratory science.
The internship consists of lecture and "hands-on" benchwork in phlebotomy, clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, immunohematology, urinalysis, microbiology, education, management, and research methods.
Students apply to the internship during the fall semester of the year they will have completed all required courses on campus. Admission to an internship is selective and based upon the student's cumulative and science grade point average, references, career motivation and personal interview.
NDSU maintains affiliations with schools of medical technology/clinical laboratory science located within the following hospitals: MeritCare Medical Center (Fargo, ND),
Fairview Health Services (Minneapolis, MN) ,
Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City (Sioux City, IA),
