Shadowing

"Shadowing" is a job observation in your profession of interest. Currently enrolled NDSU students with an interest in CLS are eligible to shadow in the MeritCare Medical Center laboratory. A typical shadow in CLS consists of rotations through these areas:

  • Hematology
  • Urinalysis
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Transfusion Services
  • Microbiology

To arrange a shadow you must do the following:
1. Complete a TB skin test. Students must provide proof of a negative result when they arrive at MeritCare for their shadow.
2. Obtain proof of MMR immunization
3. Contact the Dept. of Allied Sciences Program Assisant, Rita Prunty, at R.Prunty@ndsu.edu or 701-231-8713 to complete the shadow orientation manual and accompanying forms.
4. Contact Alice Hawley, MT (ASCP), Education Coordinator, MeritCare School of CLS at Alice.Hawley@MeritCare.com or 701-234-2482 to set a shadow date and time. To facilitate scheduling, please indicate your availability in your request for a shadow.

When you report for your job shadow, you must bring the following documentation with you:
  • proof of MMR immunization
  • proof of a negative TB skin test (or negative chest X-ray) done within the last 12 months
  • completed MeritCare General Orientation Checklist
  • completed Screening for Compliance Issues form
  • signed Confidentiality Statement

Prospective students may schedule a visit by calling 1-800-488-NDSU.
