The Profession
Construction Management is a professional service that applies effective management techniques to the construction process for the specific purposes of controlling cost, time, and quality. Construction Managers are responsible for coordinating and managing people, materials, equipment. budgets, schedules, and contracts. One of their primary duties is to ensure the safety of the workers and the general public. Construction managers evaluate and determine appropriate construction methods and cost-effective plans and schedules. They organize all construction activities into logical steps and budget the time required to meet established deadlines. Construction managers use sophisticated estimating and scheduling techniques and rely on the use of computers with specialized construction software. Construction managers direct and monitor the progress of construction activities. They also oversee the delivery and use of materials, tools, and equipment with a keen eye for the quality of construction, worker productivity, and safety. Often construction managers are responsible for obtaining all necessary permits and licenses. They must be knowledgeable of the contractual arrangements, project specifications, building codes, and safety regulations.
The Program
The Department of Construction Management and Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management that offers a blend of construction, science, and business courses. The program is designed for those who want to work in the construction industry and enjoy the status of a professional construction manager. A thorough knowledge of the math, science, and basic technologies is developed during the first two years followed by the construction management & engineering and business courses. A Minor in Business Administration is also a requirement of the program. The technical side of the program is balanced with requirements in writing, humanities, social science, and communications. The Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE).
