Where can content go?

For each CMS page, authors have the ability to provide content for several sections, as highlighted below. Other regions can be customized, but authors do not have direct access to perform changes. For the default NDSU template, regions are highlighted in the summary graphic, below.

All editable regions in the NDSU default template

Banner graphic

The banner graphic is provided by University Relations. By default, a "North Dakota State University" banner is used. Once available, the unit-specific banner will be applied to the site automatically. Site authors/publishers do not have the ability to change this graphic in the TYPO3 interface.

The banner is one fixed image. It does not rotate between a collection of images.

Navigation 1

The NAV1/TOPNAV navigation menu is styled as a black navigation bar with white text links. By default, it contains the NDSU "Prospective, Undergraduate, Graduate, Faculty & Staff, Researchers, Alumni & Friends" menu list.

The included links can be updated for the entire site by following the update template documentation.

To remove the NAV1 navigation menu entirely, submit a help request indicating that you would like to remove the NAV1 banner from the site. Don't forget to include the site URL.

Navigation 2

The NAV2 navigation menu is styled as a gold navigation bar with green text campus directory links. It contains alphabetical shortcuts to the campus directory.

To remove the NAV2 menu bar entirely, submit a help request indicating that you would like to remove the NAV2 menu from the site. Don't forget to include the site URL.

Content

For details about page content, see Page content.

Navigation 3

The NAV3 navigation menu is styled as a green text site links. It contains links to non-hidden pages within the current site in the exact order displayed in the backend pagetree. Details about hiding pages from the navigation menu, see Page create.

The current page is displayed in the menu as orange text without a link. Pages leading up to the current page--or active pages--are orange text links to help visitors see their current position in the site and locate related pages.

Home shortcut

The first visible link in the Navigation 3 menu has a special style to indicate that it is a link to the site's home page. The home shortcut link is created as the topmost page in the site's pagetree by default, as explained in Default pages.

This link is displayed as non-clickable text on the site's home page and as a clickable link on all other pages in the site. This is to follow best practices that indicate Web pages should not have a link to themself to reduce visitor confusion when the page content doesn't change on click.

Footer[1,2]

By default, the footers are populated with placeholder messages indicating that the contents should be updated. The appropriate information to include in footers is listed in the template update page, along with how to update the footer content.

Last updated

The last updated date value is included in every page and the location is not author-selectable (for example, you cannot embed it somewhere in footer content). One of two dates/formats is used for the "last updated" value:

By default, the most recent update time from the page and any of the content elements in the page will display in Day, Month, NN, YYYY HH:MM AM format (time is included).

If the page properties Last updated: field is set, that date will display in Day, Month, NN, YYYY format (time is excluded). The page properties Last updated value will override the actual last-updated time from the page/contents. This is useful if you are copying content from another system without updating it. Note that it is probably a good idea if you update the content during this transition since the RTE will be open anyway.
