In the trenches: taking an internship

Internships are a critical ingredient in the successful mix of education and experience necessary to success in a communication field. The department's internship coordinator works to find internships for all communication majors. We like to say that, because media-rich Fargo-Moorhead offers the most internship opportunities between Minneapolis and Spokane, we can nearly guarantee that we will find an internship for all qualified majors by their senior year. Not only that, but plenty of possibilities are available on campus through the university relations office, extension communication, sports information, and other areas.

In addition to its own internship office, the department coordinates many paid internships through the university's Office of Cooperative Education. This office arranges work experience for many departments through a single facility, assuring students a comprehensive listing of opportunities and an aggressive search for available jobs. While the office does not list unpaid internships, communications students who wish to gain valuable experience can receive academic credit for the work.

Both co-op generated internships and other internships must be approved by the department for credit. Generally, students are eligible for one credit for every 45 hours worked. Three credits apply to the major; the rest may apply to electives.

Recent communication student internships include work on newspapers, radio stations, television stations, institutions and commercial firms, including:
