Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are taking the education world by storm - are you ready? Although much attention is focused on English/Language Arts and Math standards within the CCSS, all educators must be aware of the skills highlighted and measured in this almost-national initiative. This course will break down seven key proficiencies into sets of skills, providing examples and instructional format for infusing CCSS skills into all disciplines and grade levels. Educators will focus on skills most applicable for their content and students, and will design lessons and activities supporting and incorporating the common core. Coursework will also focus on timely issues surrounding CCSS in its many facets. This course will serve as an invaluable resource to help your students meet the skills required for CCSS compliance

Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology users should know to use technology appropriately. Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology. Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use. Too often we are seeing students as well as adults misusing and abusing technology but not sure what to do. The issue is more than what the users do not know but what is considered appropriate technology usage.

North Dakota is a place which is part of a kaleidoscope of regions, ever changing in spatial patterns and connections locally, regionally, statewide, nationally, continentally, and globally. Because of these changes, this five-day, three-credit workshop has three themes. The first facet of the workshop for one-third of the three credits is how the regional exploration of North Dakota as a place must be in the context of the updated and revised National Geography Standards (2012), the 2009 Skills Map for Geography Initiative in geospatial technologies, and the national work on Common Core in social studies and STEM. The second facet of the workshop for the next third of the three credits is promoting curriculum development with more attention to issues of human-environment interaction through using geospatial technologies. There will be hands-on practice of classroom integration of the 2009 Skills Map for Geography Initiative in geospatial technologies and the national work on Common Core in social studies and STEM. The third facet of the workshop for the final one-third of the credit will emphasize field work and applications of historical geography. Central to this facet of the five-day workshop will be usage of the State Historical Society of North Dakota traveling exhibit, “Discovering North Dakota: 250 Years of Mapping”. This and related materials will help participants will learn how cartography and related map-making has changed to record the kaleidoscope of regions of the Peace Garden State. Thus, by combining a mixture of hands-on activities with different types of mapping to a set of inter-connected learning modules about the state’s historical geography and participating in this type of face-to-face setting there will be the best use of the instructional strategies that gives the most flexibility to teachers in preparing end-products for incorporation into their own classrooms. Woven together through the five-day workshop, these three facets will be the vehicle in which North Dakota Studies will be transformed in a kaleidoscope fashion to be a an integrative way of using geography to study North Dakota as a place this is part of an ever-changing set of spatial connections within the state and outside the state in time and space.

Real-world data are a glimpse into a complex story that involves much more detail than the numbers would suggest. In this course we want students to look "behind the scenes" by organizing, representing and analyzing these data. Technology is central to this task, both as a source of data and as a tool for data analysis. Technology tools and web-based materials provide important ways for math educators to meet key NCTM and ISTE standards that emphasize problem solving and making connections between mathematics, other disciplines and the real world. This workshop will explore a range of web-based resources and exemplary projects which utilize technology to support these goals. Participants will learn how to find sources of real data on the Web and explore how technology tools such as spreadsheets can help students analyze, visualize and make sense of these data. Participants will complete the course with a collection of resources and beginning project ideas that serve their curricular goals.

Thus, by combining a mixture of hands-on activities with different types of mapping to a set of inter-connected learning modules about the state’s historical geography, this evening-oriented course during the NDGA Summer Institute will allow teachers to have time between sessions to reflect upon what they have learned before then finishing the course in an online environment that includes Google Earth. Participating in this type of face-to-face setting and having online follow-up maximizes the best use of the instructional strategies and gives the most flexibility to teachers in preparing end-products for incorporation into their own classrooms.

Collaborative group work is a necessary part of good teaching and is proven to be a powerful learning strategy. By aligning research-based principles with practical classroom techniques, productive group work engages students by providing them with content and opportunities to develop their understanding as they move to independent learning. Productive cooperative learning also provides teachers the time to spend with students in need of additional instruction by placing the responsibility on the student and developing student competence and independence.

In order for students to be part of a knowledgeable, responsible, and caring group, they must be motivated to learn, to understand risks and opportunities, and to appreciate the needs and concerns of others. This course provides a practical guide to help students establish high quality social and emotional interactions, which enables them to be effective in all aspects of their lives, especially in school.

By combining social and emotional guidelines for educators with specific strategies to engage students, build teamwork, and promote understanding this course explains how to create the right circumstances for group learning so that students build on one another’s understanding and end up knowing more than they would have working alone.

Communication is an important part of teaching. Effective communication with students increases rapport and motivates students. Communicating appropriately increases both basic skills and higher level thinking skills as well as student achievement. Successful communication with parents and guardians ensures the best possible education for students. Practical and proper communication with colleagues and the public is essential as well. Teachers must develop an ability to discern and to respond sensitively to nonverbal messages used in a communicative transaction, rhetorical skills and delivery of specific knowledge and skills, and grounding in group discussion skills and collaborative practices. This interdisciplinary course attends to both the theoretical and the practical aspects involved in the communicative act, since communication is the very core of teaching. Communicating with students, parents and guardians, staff and the public all play an important role in the education of our students. The major purpose of this course is to focus on one of the most neglected aspects of teacher training thorough preparation in the diverse communication skills that are needed by good teachers in today's schools.

Key Technology Strategies

Technology integration has an impact on student learning when essential conditions are in place in the classroom and in teacher preparation. This course is designed to assist teachers on how to effectively incorporate technology into their curriculum by making the connection between effective research-based instructional strategies and the technologies that support them. The research behind these strategies will be examined. Using four planning questions for instruction, this course will guide teachers in aligning their curriculum, instruction, and assessment with the most appropriate and effective technologies. As pedagogy shifts from static, text-based learning to teacher as a facilitator of collaborative learning, new standards for teacher behaviors and responsibilities will be required. These standards called the NETS will be identified and applied to a teacher's professional growth.
