Course Description:

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) originated in 2010 and have been adopted by a majority of states across the country. The Standards aim to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so that teachers and parents can adequately prepare all students for success in college and careers. In this course, educators will explore the Common Core State Standards for English/Language Arts (CCSS ELA) in grades 3-5.  To do this, the purpose for the standards, the foundations of the standards, and what students are expected to know will first be explored. Then, and in greater depth, the impact of the standards on teachers’ approach to instruction will be studied. The instruction of learners with diverse learning needs (English Learners, Students with Special Needs, and Gifted and Talented Learners) will then be addressed. The intended outcome for educators engaged in this course is the capacity to prepare strong standards-aligned lesson plans. This outcome will be accomplished through the analysis, synthesis and evaluation of readings and classroom instructional videos.

Objectives:

After completing this course:

  • Educators will understand that the College and Career (CCR) Ready Anchor Standards are the foundation for the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English Language Arts (ELA).
  • Educators will understand that the CCSS ELA address four domains of literacy instruction: reading, writing, speaking & listening, and language; each domain has grade-specific standards.
  • Educators will understand that the CCSS ELA requires 6 major shifts in instructional approach; some states have consolidated the 6 shifts into 3.
  • Educators will understand that content area subject (History/Social Studies, Science, and technical subjects) learning is supported by the CCSS ELA; instruction in 3-5 is interdisciplinary.
  • Educators will understand that the learning needs of a diverse range of students (English Language Learners, Students with special needs, and gifted and talented Learners) should be embedded in their instruction.
  • Educators will understand that informal assessments should continuously inform instruction.
  • Educators will understand that parents need to be informed about the CCSS ELA and how it will impact their children’s learning.

Student Outcomes:

After completing this course, educators will be able to:

  • Communicate in parent-friendly language what students are expected to know in a standards-aligned curriculum and explain why this is important;
  • Build a classroom library with a standards-aligned balance of informational and literary materials;
  • Build a standards-aligned “text set”;
  • Plan standards-aligned lessons for grades 3-5 students using the six instructional shifts to guide best practices in teaching and learning.
