Course Description:
The dynamics of stress, sources and symptoms of stress, and stress management techniques will be presented. Research in stress from the interdisciplinary perspectives of helping professionals, wellness, education, the medical field and counseling will be the foundation for graduate level presentations.
Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to help professionals in helping professions to develop a better understanding of stress and how it affects the well-being of self and others. By creating a general awareness of stress, exploring the different sources of stress and taking steps to reduce it, one can learn to control it before it leads to burnout. Conflict management and time management, which are related topics, will also be discussed. Exercises will be included to better manage the stressful events of life.

Seaward, B. (2009). Managing stress: Principles and strategies for health and well-being (6th ed.). Sudbury, MA: Jones and Bartlett.
Additional handouts and research articles will also be suggested.

Web based, available to any computer that has a strong internet access at any time.
Class presentations (lectures) will be made available to students via the Internet (NDSU Blackboard).
Student participation via Blackboard “discussion board” (at student’s convenience).
One written assignment required (Individual developed stress management plan).
One “take-home” examination.
Paper and test due date - August 9, 2013. Grade awarded by August 12, 2013.
