Course Description:

Participants will read the text The Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence in the Elementary Grades.  The course focuses on the five tasks essential to becoming independent readers and writers.  These tasks include:  reading to self, reading to someone, writing, word work, and listening to others read.  Integrating these tasks will change your literacy block to a student driven structure with high student motivation, where students are choosing meaningful, authentic reading and writing activities.  Instead of trying to “manage” students, you will be teaching routines and strategies that develop independent literacy behaviors that will become life long habits.   This course will give you ideas to integrate reading into all subjects, and differentiate for students at any learning level.

Objectives:

As a result of this participation in this course, students should:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the five daily components;
  • Design lessons which will train students to independently participate in each of the five daily tasks;
  • Analyze current curriculum and incorporate appropriate pieces into the daily five;
  • Describe how students may be assessed;
  • Understand routines that will develop into good literacy habits.
