Participants will read the text Strategies That Work: Teaching Comprehension for Understanding and Engagement. The authors of this text make current comprehension research understandable and useable for teachers. The main premise of this course is not to tell kids how to read, but to show them. Some topics include, making connections between text and students, learning to read fiction and nonfiction, and appreciation of all genres. The course introduces strategies on “how” to read and learn from text books. The text also offers specific strategies for taking standardized tests.
As a result of this participation in this course, students should:
- Identify strategies that proficient readers use;
- Understand the components of effective comprehension instruction;
- Be able to design lessons for several specific reading strategies;
- Integrate information from content areas into comprehension instruction;
- Develop lessons that will teach strategies for text book comprehension;
- Teach strategies to increase student test performance.

About The Instructor
Shawn Gallagher earned his M.A. in Education from St. Mary's State University in Winona, MN. Shawn has a B.S. in Elementary Education from St. Cloud State University. Shawn has over 17 years of experience teaching 3rd and 4th graders.
