Course Description:

Course participants will read the text The Wonder of it All:  When Literature and Literacy Intersect by Nancy J. Johnson and Cyndi Giorgis.  Teachers will explore how literature can be a partner in education through writing, reading, and character education activities.  The materials will inspire teachers to embrace the partnership with authors through various activities such as literacy letters, poetic forms, and reader’s circles.  Student’s skills in reading, writing, and speaking will grow as a result of application of course materials.

Goals & Objectives:

As a result of this participation in this course, students should:

  1. Show synthesis of information by identifying two or more ways to implement books as partners in education.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of chapters read through written response.
  3. Develop lessons that utilize books for writing, reading, and character education.
  4. Evaluate a variety of children’s books in order to select age appropriate materials for his/her classroom.

About The Instructor

Sandra Opheim
Sandra Opheim earned an M.S. in Elementary Education from St. Mary's University. Her B.S. in Elementary Education is from the University of Minnesota. Sandra also has her Middle School Licensure in English from Bemidji State University. Sandra has over 18 years of experience teaching elementary education. She is the author of "Whose Hat is That?" published in 2004 and has also published articles in the Lake Country Journal Magazine and Her Voice Magazine.
