Course Description:

This course is designed for teachers of intermediate and middle school students.  Course participants will read the text Managing Your Classroom with Heart by Katy Ridnouer.  Teachers will examine their current classroom management styles and reflect on new methods suggested by the author.  Teachers will be presented with ideas of organization, rule establishment, communication, motivation, and challenges as they relate to adolescent students.  Teachers are encouraged to try new techniques to help reduce stress for both the teacher and students.

Goals & Objectives:

As a result of this participation in this course, students should:

  1. Examine their current discipline policies and identify strengths and weaknesses.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of chapters read through written response.
  3. Develop school year goals and an implementation plan in the area of classroom discipline.


The required reading is found in “Managing Your Classroom with Heart”  by Katy Ridnouer.

About The Instructor

Sandra Opheim
Sandra Opheim earned an M.S. in Elementary Education from St. Mary's University. Her B.S. in Elementary Education is from the University of Minnesota. Sandra also has her Middle School Licensure in English from Bemidji State University. Sandra has over 18 years of experience teaching elementary education. She is the author of "Whose Hat is That?" published in 2004 and has also published articles in the Lake Country Journal Magazine and Her Voice Magazine.
