Course Description:

This course is designed for school-based speech-language pathologists and classroom teachers who work with K-2 students.  The focus is on learning strategies and activities to help students develop and strengthen their oral language skills.  Participants will gain a deeper understanding of what Response to Intervention is, the three tiers of instruction and specific ways to foster language skills for students at each tier.

Objectives:

The primary learning objectives for this course are:

  • Understand what Response to Intervention is and be able to differentiate the three tiers of instruction.
  • Discover practical oral language based activities and materials based on the general education curriculum standards to help students build their skills in basic concepts, vocabulary, listening & speaking, phonological awareness and print knowledge.
  • Learn specific strategies to help speech-language pathologists and teachers modify their instruction.
  • Develop an understanding of the ways in which speech-language pathologists and teachers can collaborate in order to develop and enhance students’ oral language and literacy skills.

Valerie Barges

Valerie Barges earned her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Her B.A. in Human Development/Human Resources was earned from Boston College. Valerie is a licensed speech pathologist in Massachusetts and Maryland. She has over 10 years of clinical experience working with children in speech-language pathology, ranging from public schools to hospital settings.
