Course Description:

This course will focus on how to make the most out of an interactive whiteboard (IWB) such as, using premade templates and lessons, developing lessons, importing online resources, making the most of the assessment tools, and becoming familiar enough to utilize all the tools and resources available when developing lessons. The course will cover the different types of IWB’s, their history, benefits, and the research that has been done rating their effectiveness on student learning. Multiple strategies, suggestions, samples, and descriptions are provided in this course to allow proficiency in the basics of using an IWB in the classroom, to help with integrating its use with the existing technology, and to maximize their use for creating dynamic interactive lessons.

Objectives:

1. Teachers will become familiar with the different types of Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) commonly used in classrooms.
2. Teachers will learn to maximize the use of all the tools and resources available within their IWB to make its use effective in the classroom.
3. Teachers will understand the background of IWBs, the benefits, and what research says about their effectiveness.
4. Teachers will learn how to integrate and manipulate text, color, shapes, drawings, pictures, charts, and files.
5. Teachers will learn how to import audio and visual files, as well as graphics and links into IWB presentations.
6. Teachers will learn how to use alternative online IWB options.
7. Teachers will learn about IWB teacher communities and how to share and gain new resources and ideas.
8. Teachers will learn how to increase student engagement.
9. Teachers will learn how to poll students using the IWB and student response systems or online polling resources.
10. Teachers will learn how to save notes and demonstrations and how to later access them and use them for modification.
11. Teachers will learn how the IWB can be used to engage students and increase participation and collaboration.
12. Teachers will discover online resources, tools, websites, communities, technical help, lesson and activities that will help them make the most of their IWB.
13. Teachers will learn how to use the assessment tools within their IWB and will understand how to use the information they gain in conjunction with the use of their IWB to direct future teaching.
14. Teachers will learn how to organize and create pages using their IWB.
15. Teachers will learn about importing backgrounds and graphic organizers to support their lessons.
16. Teachers will learn how to develop a fully interactive, dynamic lesson/presentation using the IWB.

Laura Cahill earned her M.A. from Georgian Court University in Lakewood, New Jersey in Elementary Education. She earned her B.A. from the College of New Jersey, Ewing, New Jersey in Political Science. Laura received the NJ's Governor's School Teacher of the Year Award in 2011.
