Course Description:

This course is designed for teachers who want to understand and implement the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. By the end of this course, teachers will fully understand the scope of the Common Core State Standards and have an in-depth knowledge of what each standards means. Teachers will also have gained valuable guidance and procedures for implementing the Common Core State Standards in their classrooms.

Objectives:

1. Teachers will learn the reasons why there is a need for a common set of standards.
2. Teachers will learn the history of the Common Core State Standards.
3. Teachers will understand the development process of the Common Core State Standards.
4. Teachers will build an in-depth understanding of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics for grades K-12.
5. Teachers will build an in-depth understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
6. Teachers will build an in-depth understanding of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy for grades K-12.
7. Teachers will build an in-depth understanding of the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects.
8. Teachers will understand the importance of text complexity to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy.
9. Teachers will learn how to analyze and assess text complexity.
10. Teachers will learn how to teach the Common Core State Standards to special populations including English language learners, students with special needs, and gifted learners.
11. Teachers will understand the assessment systems currently in development specifically for the Common Core State Standards.
12. Teachers will understand the assessment options for ELLs and special needs students.
13. Teachers will learn and practice a procedure for analyzing their state standards and comparing them to the Common Core State Standards for their specific grade level.
14. Teachers will learn a procedure for developing curriculum maps based on the Common Core State Standards.
15. Teachers will build a basic understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards.

Rita Platt
Jennifer "Rita" Platt earned her M.A. in Reading from University of Southern Mississippi and her B.S. in Elementary Education from University of Wisconsin. Rita has 16+ years teaching experience and received the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award in the State of Alaska (1998).
