Course Description:

This course focuses on teaching reading to struggling readers. The focus is on initial and early identification of these students and then specific intervention strategies to try based on the specific skill deficit. Information includes strategies for English Language Learners and special education students. All five key elements of teaching reading are addressed in the course: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

Objective:

1. Teachers will learn how to identify struggling readers.
2. Teachers will learn how to provide struggling readers with skills they need.
3. Teachers will learn small group instructional strategies.
4. Teachers will learn how to assess students’ emergent literacy skills.
5. Teachers will learn emergent literacy intervention strategies and activities.
6. Teachers will learn how to assess students’ word recognition skills.
7. Teachers will learn ways to increase students’ word recognition skills using a variety of strategies.
8. Teachers will learn how to assess students’ comprehension skills.
9. Teachers will learn ways to increase students’ comprehension levels.
10. Teachers will learn ways to increase students’ vocabulary.
11. Teachers will learn how to organize literature circles.
12. Teachers will become aware of great literature selections.
13. Teachers will learn about options for assessing fluency.
14. Teachers will learn about fluency intervention strategies.
15. Teachers will learn how to use running records for assessment.

Rita Platt
Jennifer "Rita" Platt earned her M.A. in Reading from University of Southern Mississippi and her B.S. in Elementary Education from University of Wisconsin. Rita has 16+ years teaching experience and received the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award in the State of Alaska (1998).
