Course Description:

This course will build on your basic knowledge of the nature of stuttering, assessment and treatment of both children and adolescents.  Participants will be able to understand the differences between treatment and prognosis for both age groups.  The course focuses not only on the speech aspects but also on the counseling skills required in order to achieve positive outcomes. 

*This course is recommended for speech-language pathologists.   Classroom teachers, who want to gain an understanding of this disorder from a clinical perspective, may also benefit from this course in order to facilitate collaboration with the speech-language pathologist at their school. However, only licensed speech-language pathologists may diagnose and treat stuttering.

Objectives:

The primary learning objectives for this course are:

  • Learn the characteristics of stuttering in children and adolescents.
  • Identify the developmental levels of stuttering.
  • Understand and be able to utilize therapy techniques for children and adolescents who stutter.
  • Become familiar with counseling skills in order to address the fear and anxiety associated with stuttering.
