Unraveling Marital Conflict and The Pitfalls of Defensive Communication

The purpose of this workshop is to explore fundamental issues underlying all relationship conflicts, in particular, those evident in marriage. An overview of communication development will be provided. The importance of reducing defensive communication patterns will be addressed. Therapy methods for identifying and managing obstacles to adult communication styles will be introduced via attendee interactions and discussions. The question “Is a functional marriage the same as a healthy marriage?” will be explored. “How to get there” strategy will be the focus of the latter portion of the workshop.

  • Understand the natural and common origins of communication.
  • Recognize conflicts inherent in any marital relationship.
  • Recognize the point at which communication becomes defensive.
  • Know how to establish and maintain adult communication.
  • Know characteristics and interactions that define a “healthy” marriage.
