Student Story: Online Classes Help to Manage Multiple Majors
Posted on Sep, 12 2011
Hard-working student Mercedes Lee is no stranger to getting ahead in the game of completing her education. A student triple-majoring in crop and weed science, management communication, and women and gender studies, Lee had to find a way to be able to manage all the time the courses for multiple majors would require.
For a head start while still in high school, Lee completed online classes for college credit, nearly giving her enough credits to be considered a sophomore by the time she began classes at NDSU her freshman year. Now a junior at NDSU, Lee remembered how far those online classes got her and decided that would be a good way to get ahead in her communication major and free up time for other classes offered on-campus in the fall. Over the summer, Lee took 15 credits, which included her two remaining pre-communication classes, allowing her to be able to enroll in upper level communication courses this fall, all without ever stepping foot on campus or in a classroom.
“The thing that I find most helpful when taking online courses is that it gives students the opportunity to make their own schedules and work with professors in a completely different atmosphere. I enjoy having the chance to create my own learning atmosphere while deciding how much I want to put into a class. If I decide that I don’t feel like working on a particular subject one day, I am not obligated to attend lecture and I don’t have to worry about missing notes,” said Lee. Though she primarily takes on-campus classes, the ability to take 15 credits at her own pace this summer, instead of coming to campus multiple times a week, Lee was able to work without having to request time off for class and go on family vacations.
