Diversity Council ::: Meeting Minutes ::: September 12, 2001

Present: Anderson, Boswell, Davis Wallette, Gleye, Holbrook, Kostecki, Lee, Lundstrom, Malnourie, Okigbo, Peterson, Schnell, Slobin, Spiering, Stack, Thoennes, and Wigtil

I. Introductions and Announcements

A. March meeting has been changed to March 6 at 7:30am, due to Spring Break.

B. TOCAR, Training Our Campuses Against Racism, is a 4-institution effort to create a
better climate surrounding race issues.

i. TOCAR is submitting a Bremer Grant proposal to provide funding for anti-
racism training at all four campuses.

ii. Anti-racism training for NDSU will be scheduled for April 4 at 7-10pm and
April 5, 8am-5pm. Up to 40 individuals can go through this training. Trainers
are from Minnesota Churches Anti-Racism Initiative (MCARI). The target
audience for this training will be members of the Diversity Council and others
whom we will identify later - we especially want to have students involved in
this.

C. Meeting minutes - will be taken by Stack and distributed via email.

II. Report from Definitions Work Group - Thoennes


A. Small groups were formed to discuss two drafts of the Diversity Council's
Mission/Vision Statement. Some suggestions were made and will be incorporated into
the final version.

III. Announcements


A. Spiering reminded members of the Diversity Council to be sensitive to international
students in the wake of this week's events. No students have yet reported feeling
unsafe, but they have been instructed to contact campus security or International
Programs office if this changes.

B. Boswell reported that the North Dakota Diversity Council, of which he is a member,
is preparing a proposal for funding to support diversity on each campus in the state.

C. October is Cultural Awareness Month. As part of that month's programming, a
diversity trainer will be on campus. More details will follow.

A. October 10 at 7:30am

i. Report on the Change Agent States for Diversity consortium - Karen Zotz,
Assistant Director, NDSU Extension Service

ii. Discovering Diversity Profile - Exploring Differences in the Workplace

iii. Finalize the Mission/Vision/Guiding Statement

iv. Preliminary report on institutional demographics (Situation
Analysis/Research Group)
