Diversity Council ::: Meeting Minutes ::: January 9, 2002

Present: Anderson, Boswell, Gleye, Holbrook, Jacobson, Kostecki, Lee, Malnourie, Okigbo, Schnell, Slobin, Spiering, Stack, Thoennes, and Ussatis

I. Introductions and Announcements

A. "Embracing a More Diverse North Dakota" conference is on January 21 in Bismarck.

B. "Keeping our Faculties" conference is April 21-23 at the University of Minnesota.

C. TOCAR Collaborative is seeking individuals for its assessment subcommittee. If you
have suggestions for faculty to participate in this effort, please forward names to
Sandy.

D. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day event is scheduled for Monday, January 21 at 7pm in
the Fargo Theatre.

E. NDSU's 6th Annual Human Relations Day is scheduled for Thursday, January 17.

F. Woodlands and High Plains Powwow is scheduled for Saturday, February 16 at
Concordia College.

II. Review and finalize draft vision statement (Thoennes) -


A. Vision Statement - Council members reviewed two draft versions of the Vision
Statement and offered feedback. Group members will finalize this statement for the
next meeting.

III. Progress report from Situational Anaysis group (Okigbo) -

A. Subgroup members are collecting biographical information about students, faculty
and staff at NDSU. Information received from the International Programs office was
reviewed by Council members.

IV. Opportunities for subcommittee work -

A.
Holbrook asked that Council members think about individuals who might be
interested in assisting our work through various subcommittees.

V. Sporting Events

A. Council members discussed the upcoming NDSU/UND home basketball game
(February 2) and possible educational opportunities to promote a more positive sense
of school spirit.

B. Possible groups to work on this were mentioned: Bison Brigade, Bison Ambassadors,
Blue Key, AISES, NASA. Dr. Wallman will be submitting a letter to The Spectrum.
Other ideas included an advertisement, sponsored by the Diversity Council, in The
Spectrum and a student-driven pledge campaign to promote positive behavior. Lee
and Malnourie will take charge of this effort.

A. February 13 at 7:30am
