Diversity Council ::: Meeting Minutes ::: March 6, 2002

Present: Anderson, Boswell, Holbrook, Jacobson, Kitch, Kostecki, Lee, Malnourie, Okigbo, Peterson, Schnell, Slobin, Spiering, Stack, Thoennes, Wallette, and Wigtil

I. Announcements

A. Introductions and welcome to Rhonda Kitch.

B. "Keeping our Faculties" conference is April 21-23 at the University of Minnesota.
Holbrook will get details out to conference registrants about finalizing their
arrangements.

C. Civil Education Month is scheduled for April. Several events are being planned -
details will follow from Stack.

D. Peterson reported on a recent conference he attended focused on Cultural
Competence. He learned that many schools are struggling with this and found NDSU
to be ahead of the curve in terms of addressing this issue intentionally as an
institutional initiative. The National Center for Cultural Competence (Georgetown
University) provided information and resources. Cultural Competence differs from
Awareness/Understanding in that awareness of diversity issues does not mean that
the culture is competent in dealing with them.

II. TOCAR Training (April 4-5) -

A. Holbrook routed a sign-up list for Council members to indicate if they will attend.

B. The training schedule is: Thursday, April 4 at 7-9pm and Friday, April 5 at 8am -
5pm. Location information will be routed soon.

C. Please note that attendees will not be able to leave for class or meetings during
the training session. Holbrook asked that attendees block the entire time out of their
schedules for training.

III. Planning for a Cultural Audit (Jacobson) - see handout for more details

A. Jacobson handed out a report regarding the cultural audit - please refer to this for
greater details.

B. The recommended culture audit will be developed and implemented to help us
understand the roots of the culture of our organization. An insider/outsider consultant
team will be utilized to implement the audit. It was recommended that the external
consultant be someone from outside our region.

C. A subcommittee has been formed to work with the external consultants: Okigbo,
Anderson, Spiering, Holbrook, Wallette, Slobin, and Jacobson

IV. Next Meeting

A. April 10 at 7:30am in Badlands Room

B. Proposed Agenda Items
