Diversity Council ::: Meeting Minutes ::: August 28, 2002
Present: Anderson, Boswell, Burnett, Gleye, Holbrook, Kamel, Kitch, Kostecki, Lee, Lundstrom, Malnourie, Okigbo, Schnell, Spiering, Stack, Thoennes, Wallette, White, and Wigtil
Guests: Nancy Lilleberg and Matthew Feist, ITS
I. Introductions
A. Two new members of the Diversity Council were introduced: Ahmed Kamel, faculty
member in Computer Science,and Alan White, Dean of the College of Science and
Math.
II. Web Page Presentation
A. Matthew Feist, ITS, demonstrated the new web page design that will be made
available to the public by mid-October.
B. Some Diversity Council members who do not have a photograph on file at
Publication Services have been contacted by Stack. These individuals should either
email a photo directly to Matt at matthew.feist@ndsu.nodak.edu or stop by
Publication Services for a new one (on Wednesdays between 9:30 and 11:30am).
C. Members should send any ideas for the page or upcoming diversity-related events
to either Matt or Kara.
D. It was suggested to include a section for people to comment about the Diversity
Council's work or the web page.
E. Climate assessment
i. Holbrook announced that the University is in the final contracting stages
with Sue Rankin.
ii. Holbrook distributed a project description for this two-year project.
iii. Volunteers were sought to talk to some selected groups about the audit
and are asked to contact Holbrook when they have done this. Volunteers are
as follows:
1. President's Cabinet - Schnell and Holbrook
2. President's Council - Schnell and Holbrook
3. Dean's Council - Peterson and White
4. University Senate - Schnell and Burnett
5. Staff Senate - Kostecki, Kitch and Stack
6. Student Government - Lee and Malnourie
7. Department Chairs - Holbrook presented in August; Wigtil and Gleye
will follow-up
8. University Relations - Holbrook and Okigbo
9. Faculty teaching general ed courses with diversity component -
Schnell and Holbrook
10. RAs and RHA - Thoennes
11. Greek Life - Stack
12. VPSA - Kostecki
13. Congress of Student Organizations (CSO) - Malnourie and Lee
14. Advisory Board for Student Affairs - Lee
III . TOCAR membership update
A. The team now numbers 15 faculty, administrators, staff and students and will be
commissioned at the President's State of the University Address in October. An
updated list of members of the team was distributed.
IV. Recruitment Brochure
A. Burnett, Wallette, and White volunteered to serve on a subcommittee to work on a
brochure to be used for the recruitment of people of color and women to faculty
positions at NDSU.
V. Meeting Time - Fall Semester
A. First Friday of the month at 9-10:30am
VI. Announcements
A. October is Disability Awareness Month
B. 32 Tribal Colleges will hold a conference in Fargo at the Ramada Plaza Suites this
spring (March 29-April 1); the Council will explore ways to connect with
representatives during the conference
C. A committee of students and staff members will meet this afternoon to plan an
event for the one-year anniversary of September 11.
D. Okigbo suggested the Diversity Council do a brief assessment of our work to
forward to the President at the start of this new school year so that he can include
comments in his State of the University address.
