Diversity Council ::: Meeting Minutes ::: May 2, 2003

Present: Anderson, Burnett, Gleye, Holbrook, Kamel, Kitch, Lee, Malnourie, Schnell, Spiering, Stack, Thoennes, Ussatis, White, and Wigtil

I. Announcements

A. Tapestry Induction ceremony - 12pm on Friday, May 9 the Memorial Union Alumni Lounge. Those being inducted are: Sanku Mallik (Chemistry), Jill Walkinshaw (Admissions), Peg Furshong (Memorial Union), Tom Carlson (Marriage and Family Therapy), and Renu Jyoti (student).

B. TOCAR celebration and reunion - 5-7pm on Tuesday, May 13 at Northwest Tech. Please RSVP to Sandy by May 5.

II. Update on Climate Assessment -

A. Just under 1,600 responses were received for the assessment; demographic information will soon be coming to determine if the responses are representative of the population at NDSU.

B. The Diversity Council will start to receive drafts of the analysis in early Fall with a final report scheduled for November.

C. Council members offered some feedback regarding the web format of the survey being somewhat confusing for some people.

III. Planning for Next Year

A. Council members discussed forming a subcommittee to organize presentations for campus groups to start in the Fall. Membership on the subcommittee will be discussed at June meeting.

B. Council members discussed other efforts to support/enhance the strategic planning next year. Suggestions were offered to hold open forums, staff contact tables in the Memorial Union, and meet with student organizations (especially organizations that work with students of color).

C. TOCAR Team is forming 3 work groups, one of which is focused on training efforts. It is anticipated that TOCAR will be prepared to offer introductory training sessions in the Fall.

IV. Web Page Update

A. Ongoing maintenance for the web page will be transitioned into Dr. Schnell's office, as the student who developed the page graduates this spring.

V. Recruiting Brochure Committee Update

A. Discussed adding some faculty who are not currently on the Council to work with this committee.
B. Committee will have a report at the June 6 meeting.

VI. Diversity Council Membership

A. With some students on the Council graduating this spring, we need to identify some more students to join in the Fall. Cathy will follow up with Paul Lundstrom to determine if he will be here in the Fall. Kerri will connect with some international students about joining the Council.

VII. Other Business

A. Summer Meetings

i. No Meetings in July
ii. Subgroups will continue to meet
iii. Will organize a special meeting when Sue Rankin returns to campus this summer

B. Next meeting: Friday, June 6 at 8am in Meinecke
