I. Announcements
a. Introductions
b. Dr. Schnell is at SDSU receiving a Distinguished Alumni Award (Congratulations!)
c. Native American Spiritual Leader to present on the significance of the Pow Wow to native people (November 15)
d. People of Color at Predominantly White Institutions Conference in Lincoln (November 15 and 16)
e. Murry Sinclair visit (Monday, November 22)
f. Level II anti-racism training in November was postponed until January 2005
g. Destruction of 10% Society Banner for National Coming Out Week
-banner was hanging over door of Union
-destroyed on evening/night of November 2, 2004
-letter to The Spectrum (TOCAR and Diversity Council Members could sign letter)
h. Tapestry of Diversse Talents induction (Friday, December 10, 12:00 p.m., Alumni Lounge)
II.Strategic Plan Update
a. Ann Burnett, Kara Stack and Sandy Holbrook have spent a substantial amount of time editing strategic plan
b. Kara Stack and Rhonda Kitch presented the Strategic Plan PowerPoint to the group
c. Strategic Plan presentation handouts were circulated
d. Routing sheet for volunteers to present plan to various campus groups.
e. Next step (handout)
-New subcommittees have been formed
-Meet prior to the next Diversity Council meeting
-Review assigned component (from document that was sent electronically) and check for clarity of the action step, appropriateness of components of the action step in regards to administrative oversight, resources, outcome(s), relationship to climate survey, progress to date and time frame
-Subcommittees are to come back to the Diversity Council with narrative comments (Best Practice: Indicate the action step number and write narrative comments after, not to incorporate into grid document)
f. Assessment Outcomes and Performance indicators will be the next steps in the process
g. Ideas for consideration--
-Have this woven into the University assessment process
***Look at macro and micro meanings and levels
***Have guest speaker to discuss the nature of assessment
***Have peer-plan review teams that are institution-wide
***Include individuals beyond the Diversity Council
III. Update from Anti-Racism Team (T. Stone Carlson and T. Henke on behalf of TOCAR)
a. Climate survey related to racism
-Quantitative results have been analyzed
-Results will be presented and disseminated to campus community to raise awareness
-Subgroup is analyzing qualitative pieces
-Need to look at how TOCAR survey can impact Diversity Council Strategic Plan action steps
b. Involved in Higher Education Anti-Racism Team (HEART)
-Institutions involved: Concordia, Bethel, MSUM, MnSCU, Mankato, and NDSU
-Moving forward with "Train the Trainer" opportunities for Level 1
****Give greater autonomy
****Cost savings
****Trainings would be conducted from within the HEART group
c. Working on a Bremer grant to support and increase anti-racism programs
-A mentoring program would be a component of this--institutions with anti-racism programs would mentor new institutions
d. Creating a structure as a team to move forward on action steps
-TOCAR Team Structure:
****Team structure and organization
****Data collection, analysis, and evaluation
****Educating the campus community to achieve anti-racist status
****Collaborating with community entities
e. As Diversity Council begins to look at assessment and performance issues we need to look at ways to merge our work.
IV. Other subcommittee reports
a. Subcommittee to explore policy options related to maternity/parental leave for 9-10 month faculty
-Met; Sandy will draft language to bring to Diversity Council
b. Subcommittee on bigotry response plan
-Have not met, will be soon
c. Recruitment brochure for faculty and staff recruited nationally
-No update

Next meeting is December 10 at 2:30 p.m. in Prairie. President Chapman will be attending. A Jewish group from the Twin Cities may also be in attendance.
