Diversity Council ::: Meeting Minutes ::: January 21, 2005

Present: H. Bastow-Shoop, G. Berry, A. Eichenberger, S. Holbrook, A. Kamel, R. Kitch, A. Kostecki, H. Nesemeier, C. Okigbo, C. Schnell, K. Spiering, K. Stack, K. Thoennes, R. Ussatis, and J. Davis Wallette


I. Announcements

. TOCAR Level II training is in progress at NDSU (January 20-22). There are 13-14 NDSU participants, with additional participants from Concordia College, Minnesota State University Moorhead and the YWCA.
. Civil Education Month is in April. This month focuses on diversity, social justice and civic engagement issues. Planned events:
o Human Race Machine (an interactive experience) will be on campus April 4-5.
o Kathy Martinez (Kathy is Hispanic, American Indian and blind) is being sponsored by Disability Services. She will be on campus April 6th for a Brown Bag noon session and an evening session
o Tim Wise (a nationally known author who focuses on white privilege and power) will be on campus April 13th for a Brown Bag noon session and an evening session.
o Boxes and Walls will be on April 20th. This is an interactive museum that addresses oppression. Planning to feature: economic disparity, privilege, Hispanic/Latinos, Asian people, and Holocaust
o Brown Bag session on "Gender Gap in Politics" is on April 27
. On March 9th Gene Berry will be presenting a Brown Bag "The Concept of Race in Humans"


II.Strategic Plan Update

. Subcommittee Reports were given, with items for discussion within each objective
. Sandy will incorporate changes, update plan and send out to Council
. Sign up taken for three new subcommittees:
o Assessment
--Review recommendations for assessment and the suggested methodology. Propose revisions (additions or deletions) of the suggested assessment means and the methodology including a timetable.
o Performance Indicators
--Review the suggested performance indicators for academic units for each of the five plan objectives and propose revisions. Develop performance indicators for other campus units.
o Evaluation Teams
--Review the proposal for strategic plan evaluations teams and propose revisions to both the plan and to the timetable.
. Council members not present can forward committee preferences to Sandy, or she will be in contact with members not present.

III. Updates

. Recruitment brochure
o Sandy shared a mock up. Provide feedback to Sandy.
o Will explore a pdf link of the brochure for earlier access
. Bigotry response plan
o Group has met and provided handouts of a draft plan
o Will meet again on Friday, February 11 at 8:00 a.m. in the Union
o Would welcome student and faculty input
o Will take more time to analyze at another meeting; let Karla know any feedback from current draft plan
. HEART proposal
o HEART is a regional anti-racism group comprised of institutions in Minnesota and NDSU
o Have submitted a Bremer grant proposal looking at a full-time director position
o This position could be associated with the Diversity Council's efforts
o President Chapman and Provost Schnell have given support of this effort

. Friday, June 17 - noon to 1:30 pm

Next meeting is Friday, February 18th at 12:00 p.m. in Meineke Board Room.
