Announcements

• Introduction of new council members
o Dr. Wendy Troop Gordon – Assistant Professor, Psychology
o Dante Miller – Vice President, Student Government
o D.C. Coston – Vice President for Agriculture and University Extension
• Lee Mun Wah
o Diversity-related presenter; this is a skill-building workshop
o October 4 from 4:30 – 9:00 p.m. at the Dome
o Sponsored by YWCA
o Free of charge
o Mindful Facilitation Workshop on October 5 (8 – 4) YWCA has reserved 2 spots for NDSU people; let Sandy know if interested
• Safe Zone Ally training
o August 30 in University Chamber (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
• Kara will bring information about an upcoming GLBT conference in Moorhead on Friday, October 7. This is a professional issues conference. Student rate registration is also available, as well as half-day registrations for students.
• Multicultural Student Services will hold their fall social at the Alumni Center on Wednesday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m.
• TOCAR updates:
o Half-day anti-Racism trainings will be held fall semester (likely 2-4 through October and November). Forward interest to Gene Berry. Council members encouraged to attend a session (level 1 and beyond if interested).
o TOCAR is also open to unit training sessions; let Gene know if interested.
o The regional HEART group held a week-long intense “train the trainers” session this summer. Kara Stack, Tom Carlson, Jaclynn Davis Wallette, and Gene Berry attended from NDSU. This participation allows flexibility in facilitation of future level 1 trainings.
• The Native American Pharmacy Program, Multicultural Student Services, Diversity Council and Office of Admission sponsored an ad in Indian Country Today’s education issue
• Allan Johnson will be here October 26 at 7:00 p.m. in Century Theater, followed by a showing of the movie Crash.
o Allan is a sociologist; written about issues of race and gender in relation to power. Crash is a powerful movie about differences.
• Department of Residence Life’s diversity initiative
o Developed this summer
o RISE (Respecting Individuals, Supporting Equity)
o North Dakota State University - Department of Residence Life is Committed to Rising Above: ignorance, racism, narrow-mindedness, ageism, prejudice, stereotypes, bigotry, misconceptions, inequality, hatred, ableism, snobbery, biases, class, injustice, sexism, partiality, homophobia, fanaticism, discrimination, segregation, intolerance, preconceptions, judgment, animosity, sectarianism

Volunteers for Diversity Council information table
• Monday, August 29 – Wednesday, August 31—11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. each day

Review of final strategic plan and discussion of ways to share plan
• See “NDSU Strategic Plan for Diversity: 2005 – 2010 Overview” handout
• Goal is to work towards this being a part of the institutional fabric
• Reviewed “NDSU Strategic Plan for Diversity: Action Steps by Unit” handout
• Units will likely report their activity through their annual reports
• Hard copies of strategic plan will be given to Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors and Department Heads
• Strategic plan will be available from Diversity Council’s website
