Announcements:

  • Black History Month Events - February
    • From Ghana to Fargo - Brown Bag Presentation; Wednesday, February 7th at 12:00 pm; Memorial Union - Century Theater; NDSU graduate student, Noah Addy, will discuss his experience transitioning from Ghana to the American Midwest.
    • Love and Law: Interracial Raletionships in U.S. History; Tuesday, February 13th at 12:30 pm; Memorial Union - Family Life Center (FLC) 319; This presentation will provide an overview of the tangled legal and social history of how laws were previously established to regulate interractial relationships in America. Anti-Racism Team member and NDSU professor of History Larry Peterson will be the featured speaker.
    • Panel Discussion - Brown Bag Presentation; "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?"; Wednesday, February 14th at 12:00 pm; Memorial Union - Century Theater.
    • A Girl Like Me; Tuesday, February 20th at 12:30 pm; Memorial Union - Family Life Center (FLC) 319; This presentation will begin with a short 7-minute video, which is a catalyst for the conversation on how to honor difference and personal experieces with stereotyping and racism. Anti-Racism Team member Malika Carter and Anti-Racist ally Babette Patton will facilitate the discussion.
    • Film: The Originals of Alice Walker (30 minutes); Wednesday, February 21st at 12:30 pm; Memorial Union - Century Theater; Author of the PUlitzer Price-winning novel "The Color Purple," Alice Walker discusses a variety of topics, including family violence and the position of black women in America.
    • Discover Botswana Presentation; Monday February 26th at 12:00 pm; Memorial Union - Family Life Center (FLC) 320; NDSU graduate student Vanessa Waserman will discuss her experience traveling to Botwana over the winter break.
    • Sisterhood Circle: Interracial Adoptions; Monday, February 26th at 2:00 pm; Ceres Hall 205; NDSU student Ebony Anderson and community members Kari Schiller and Linda Hankel, will share their experiences with interracial adoption.
  • World Premier Exhibit: January 10 - May 6, 2007, at the Science Museum of Minnesota - "Race: Are We So Different?" http://www.smm.org/race/
    • Anti-Racism Team has discussed visiting (DC members are invited).
  • Next race and justice event - last week in March and last week in April, but specific dates and locations are pending.
  • Level I Anti-Racism Training - Tuesday, January 30th, 8:00 am to 12:00 pm for Extension Group.
  • David Faber
    • Friday, January 26, 7:00 pm, Festival Hall
    • Saturday, January 27, 1:00 pm, Festival Hall
  • Women's Week - February 26th through March 2nd
    • 25th Anniversary of the event iwll focus on invisibility.
    • Februrary 20th, MU Ballroom - "Deadly Persuasion: Advertising and Addiction," speaker Dr. Jean Kilbourne.
    • February 28th, Century Theater - "Invisible No More: The Growing Infuence of Women in Politics," speaker Governor Chris Gregoire.
  • Update on awards from diversity programming proposals:
    • To date, five porposals have been submitted and funded. The current balance of the fund is $7,200.00.
  • Report on MKL readings:
    • Over 100 people were registered as speakers, but Malika reported that many more people participated. She said the event was well publicized and well received.

Report on Multicultural resources project.

  • Working on final gathering and compilation of resources.
  • E-mail alias for additional information and contact requests has been set up.
  • Working on website design and setup.
  • It was suggested that MSUM might already have a similar resource guide. Kristina will contact Bill Garcia to inquire about it.

Diversity Impact Award

  • Malika asked for comments and changes regarding the nomination forms.
  • Forms will be available on the web and will be sumitted attached to an e-mail to the Diversity Council. Forms may also be submitted in hard copy form.
  • Council members discussed a set time-frame and deadline for nominations.
  • Awards will be given at Tapestry of Diverse Talents Showcase.
  • The committee working on this will bring the final forms and process to present to the Diversity Council for the February meeting.

Update and discussion re: President's comments/request at December 2006 meeting.

  • Dr. Schnell updated the council on activities and plans regarding the meeting with President Chapman inJanuary. President Chapman is committed to changes at NDSU regarding gender equity.
    • Sue Rankin will be studying exit interviews/data from women who have left.
    • Dr. Schnell discussed daycare for children on campus with Dr. Virginia Clark-Johnson, Dean of the College of HD&E. They will be working on expanding he daycare program to include summer months and increasing care for newborns. Council members asked about whether the hours could be extended past 6:00 pm. NDSU is also looking at space in the old Hector Airport Terminal. Part of the facilities would house engineering research and part could be used as a new daycare area. This would expand campus daycare services.
    • Ann Burnett has been researching information regarding a Women's Center on campus that will be available for students, faculty and staff.
    • Council members suggested reviewing facmily leave policies on campus. Forward/Advance group will be working with Sandy to develop som proposals.
    • Council members suggested the committee also review the spousal hire policy and how NDSU might enhance that. Sandy encouraged continued conversation regarding the policy in order to get the word out. The informaion is currently offered at search committtee training and brochures are available.
    • Council members discussed the need for clarity regarding the tenure stop clock policy.
    • Council mewmbers discussed the availability of lactation rooms, and if plans were in place to include them at the downtown location.
    • If council members have any additional ideas, contact Dr. Schnell or Sandy, or talk to President Chapman.

Council members discussed a recent editorial in The Forum regarding a student goup at UND nominating officials of the NCAA for an MLK award.

Diversity Strategic Plan - update on accounability plan:

  • Sandy reminded the council that it is important to have a good system for collecting information. Gene T., Ann, Karla, and Sandy agreed to meed regarding the accountability plan, and report more finalized informationto the council at the next meeting.

  • All in Meinecke at 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.

  • Friday, May 18th
