Diversity Strategic Plan - update on accountability plan (Burnett, Holbrook, Taylor, Thoennes)

  • Handout was distributed regarding plan review team proposal.
  • Discussion was held:
    • Chuck asked a question about training on how to complete the reviews. Who would do it and how would it be done?
      • The subcommittee members indicated that co-chairs of the review teams would be trained first and then team members would be trained as well.
    • Teams would review the annual report plans and give feedback to the Vice-President.
    • Chuck asked about how review information may be used by Deans of Colleges. Specifically, how would Deans get feedback on what the team felt was working and what needed improvement?
      • Craig Suggested that he would bring the review information to the Dean's council. He also indicated that he would duplicate the narrative and give it to each college.
      • It was suggested that review teams could also go to the Dean's council and present brief summaries.
      • The council discussed the importance of giving unit feedback so that changes could be made if necessary.
      • Craig suggested that pages of the strategic plan format could be updated to include additional blocks on the right side for review teams to write suggestions and comments.
    • It was suggested that there be some guideline for the review team to present information to the Vice-President. For example, feedback should be specific and relate directly to the Strategic Plan.
    • Council members agreed that this plan should move ahead, adapting as needed to reflect the discussion.

Council discussed recruiting students from under-represented populations and who is responsible for it. Andreas asked specifically about recruitment strategies for Native American students from North Dakota schools. Holly asked about the possibility of more opportunities for "active recruiting" by department and faculty instead of only sending admissions people. Andrea talked about the need for visitors who were interested in recruiting to know the community, the businesses, and job opportunities available for graduates in different fields.
