Diversity Council ::: Meeting Minutes ::: February 22, 2008

Minutes:

  • Craig Schnell and Evie Myers, co-chairs, welcomed everyone and made introductions.

  • Bunnie Johnson-Messelt gave a presentation from the strategic review team for Student Affairs and Athletics. Their reports had highlights, efforts for the five strategic objectives, efforts with no clear connection, promising practices, and potential efforts. A discussion followed.

  • Charles Peterson gave a presentation from the strategic review team for Business Administration and University Relations. The Business Administration had bias links on all websites. There were identified areas lacking feedback. Their format was great. University Relations report represented diversity in publications. They need to develop a more comprehensive plan to broaden their horizon. A discussion followed.

  • Charles Peterson talked about the assessments and how they need to be driven by the strategic plan, not just taking credit for what has been done but rather what will be actions and steps for next year and then an assessment plan and strategy to see if those goals have been achieved. We cannot have assessment without goals. Then we can think about what lessons have been learned? Plan review teams needs guidelines, format, time frames, training, and lists. We need to prioritize in investing time, effort, and resources. A discussion followed.

  • Casey Peterson gave a report on the 2009 Climate Survey planning process, marketing, and inventive ways to get people to take the survey next spring. A suggestion of prizes as incentives was mentioned.

  • Evie Myers gave an update on the women’s focus groups, bias reports, and websites.

  • Ann Burnett mentioned Women’s Week is March 11 – 17, the week after spring break. The Woodlands and High Plains Powwow is March 15 at Concordia. The Soul Food Dinner will be held at the University Center.

  • Kristen Behrens said March 16 is the multicultural student recruitment day.

  • Gene Berry and Holly Bastow-Shoop talked about their recent trip to India. Holly is conducting a seminar next fall. Some suggested books to read are “50 years of Higher Ed in India” and “In spite of the Gods”.

  • The next meeting will have presentations from the Provost/VPAA and the VPRCATT& VPAG Extension Strategic Plan Review Teams
