CONSERVATION SCIENCE GRADUATE PROGRAM

The Graduate Program in Environmental and Conservation Science (ECS) program comprises an integrative curriculum that emphasizes the common ground shared by all sciences. There are two tracks: Environmental Sciences and Conservation Biology. See About ECS for more information.

 

NDSU ECS NEWS & EVENTS

Focus the Nation! Global Warming Solutions for America
On January 30-21, NDSU will participate in the national educational event Focus the Nation. More than 1000 universities, high schools and other organizations have signed up for simultaneous educational symposia held across the country.
The intent is to collaboratively engage in a nationwide, interdisciplinary discussion on "Global Warming Solutions for America."

SCHEDULE AND DESCRIPTIONS of events on and off NDSU Campus in conjunction with Focus the Nation (.pdf)

Teach-In: NDSU Faculty will devote one regularly scheduled class period to discuss, debate, or perform activities relevant to climate change and alternative energy. (January 30 & 31, all day)

Teach-Out: NDSU Faculty, students or interest groups will travel to local high schools to speak on global warming and alternative energy. This will be organized with collaboration with the NDSU GraSUS program (http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/grasus/). (January 30 & 31, all day)

Videos: We have arranged on January 31 from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm to show videos relevant to climate change and alternative energy, including Al Gore’s "An Inconvenient Truth", in the Century Theater, free of charge to the public!

Student Organization Activities: Student organizations have planned different events for their members, as well as, other interested students, faculty or public. Activities, include speakers from local companies and NDSU Faculty, will be held in the Memorial Union (Rooms - Agassiz, Hidatsa, Lake, Lark, and Meadow) from 2:00 to 6:30 pm on January 31.

2% Solution: January 30 at 7:00 pm a live interactive web-cast with Stanford University climate scientist, Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins and green jobs pioneer Van Jones will be streamed in the Construction Management Auditorium. Senator Dorgan’s Speech: Senator Dorgan will be addressing the NDSU Campus via web-cast in the Century Theater at 3:30 pm on January 31.

Main Event: Focus the Nation NDSU will culminate in IACC 104 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm with presentations from a distinguished NDSU Professor, City of Fargo Commissioner, City of Fargo Mayor and the To Cross the Moon (www.2XtM.org) adventurers.

ECS 770 ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND POLICY was taught Fall Semester, 2007.

This course is an introduction to major federal and state statues and regulatory programs that govern environmental quality, pollution control and wildlife management, including legislative enactment, regulatory development, enforcement, federal/state relationship and judicial interpretation.

It is taught one evening per week by T.L. Norgard, J.D., a practicing environmental lawyer with experience in counseling Federal agencies on administrative law issues, and in teaching.
