The 2012 Dr. B. Wayne Blanchard Award for Academic Excellence in Emergency Management Higher Education was awarded to Brenda Phillips, Ph.D. at the 14th Annual Emergency Management Higher Education Conference. An excerpt from the nomination letter for Dr. Phillips reveals a few of the reasons why she was this year's Blanchard Award recipient. The letter stated, "

Few individuals have contributed as much to building an academic discipline of emergency management as Dr. Phillips has. In addition to contributions made through teaching emergency management to both undergraduate and graduate students at OSU, Dr. Phillips has made significant contributions to the entire emergency management higher education enterprise in several key ways. Dr. Phillips has authored several emergency management textbooks including Qualitative Disaster Research (forthcoming, 2012), Introduction to Emergency Management (2011), and Disaster Recovery (2009). She has published many journal articles on the topic of emergency management higher education. These articles have addressed key issues higher education is confronting such as incorporating research into classrooms, evaluating where emergency management is relative to traditional academic disciplines, and methodological issues and approaches in disaster research. She has also spoken on these topics at conferences. Dr. Phillips has also conducted research on a variety of topics throughout her career. She has focused on social vulnerability issues as relates to emergency management. Her work on social vulnerability issues has contributed to the body of knowledge that grounds emergency management in higher education and informs how emergency management is practiced in the field."
