The Choir

The NDSU Concert Choir has a rich and distinguished tradition of performing the highest quality literature at the highest level of artistry.  Under Jo Ann Miller's direction, the choir has been invited to perform at many state and regional music conventions.  Most recently, the choir sang at the National ACDA convention in San Antonio Texas. They have also been in demand by regional orchestras and have performed such masterworks as Vaughan William's Sea Symphony, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Verdi's Requiem, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, the War Requiem of Benjamin Britten, and Belshazzar's Feast by William Walton.  The choir tours every spring and has performed in 30 states in the continental United States and several provinces in Canada.  They take a European tour every four years, most recently touring Italy in the spring of 1998.

The singers are undergraduates from all areas of university study.  About half of the group are music majors, most of those studying to be music educators.  The 60 students rehearse every day and perform several concerts a year on campus in addition to their annual spring tours.  The choir has produced more than 30 recordings, including seven compact discs.

The repertoire of the choir is solidly traditional.  Because of the touring the choir does, most of the repertoire is unaccompanied, a mix of sacred and secular and including all style periods.  For their European tours, the programs showcase American composers of art music as well as the the rich folk song traditions of America.

Auditions

Auditions are arranged by contacting Dr. Jo Ann Miller at 231-7822.  Because Concert Choir is a full year commitment, auditions usually take place either the spring or summer prior to the school year.  The auditions consist of vocalizing to determine range and voice type, pitch and melody matching, some sight reading and a prepared piece, if possible.  An accompanist is provided.  The audition usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals for the Concert Choir are 12:00 - 12:50 on MWF and 12:30 - 1:45 p.m. on TR.  There are some extra rehearsals during the year, depending upon the concert schedule, but these are announced at the beginning of each year.
