World Premiere - "Swimming Into Winter"The concerts will feature the premiere of Jocelyn Hagen's "Swimming Into Winter," commissioned by the NDSU School of Music. The composition is written for chorus and winds, specifically an ensemble of thirteen wind players and three percussion; in addition, the two performing groups collaborate as equal partners throughout the work. "While composing this work, Swimming Into Winter, I found myself fascinated by the ideas of transition and change," Hagen said. "I found it inspiring to imagine the subtle changes in nature throughout the year and reflect them in the music. ... We are constantly changing, evolving, and transitioning. Perhaps this is what Freya Manfred, the poet of the last poem, meant by 'swimming.' The word evokes grace and confidence, and these are qualities I embraced in the composition of this piece." |
